Dylan’s Women

I‘ve been reading the memoirs of Suze Rotolo, Bob Dylan’s girlfriend from 1961 to 1964, who was the woman pictured with him on the cover of The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. From what I already knew about their relationship and the relationships that came between them, I was hoping for some juicy details of Dylan’s affair with Joan Baez from the scorned woman.

I was disappointed. Rotolo barely mentions Baez, and when she does, there’s no catfights. Rotolo is polite and complimentary of Baez’s talents. Perhaps time has healed that wound, but it got me wondering more about Dylan’s “chicks.” I decided to make a rough timeline of his romantic relationships, but the dates were difficult to figure out, as many of the relationships overlapped and were secretive. I’m sure I’m missing a lot, and some of these were only rumored:

High school girlfriend: Echo Helstrom (had the house with Jimmie Rodgers records)

1961-1964: Suze Rotolo

1963-1965: Joan Baez

1965: Edie Sedgwick

1965: Dana Gillespie

1965-1977: marriage to Sara Lownds

1970s: (nanny affair) Faridi McFree

1977: Malka Marom

Background singers of the 1970s-80s: Mary Alice Artes (Christianity converter), Helena Springs, Clydie King (allegedly his favorite)

Late 1980s-1990s: Carole Childs

1986-1992: marriage to Carolyn Dennis

1990s: Susan Ross
